Download Scootch

The latest version. What's new

Install it on each computer you'll use together, the same version on every one. After that, Scootch keeps them up to date. It's free for 3 days; then one key, bought once, covers them all.

Then, two minutes of setup

  1. Install Scootch on both computers.
  2. On the one whose keyboard and mouse you'll use, open Scootch and choose This computer's. It shows a six-digit code.
  3. On the other, choose Another computer's, pick your first computer and type the code.
  4. Click Allow on the first computer. Now move your pointer across.

If something gets in the way

Windows

Windows says it protected your PC
Choose More info, then Run anyway. The installer is signed by Afterimage Software Ltd, but Windows can still warn about an app it hasn't seen many people install yet.

Mac

macOS says it can't check Scootch for malware
Click Done, then open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. It may ask twice: once for the disk image, then once for Scootch itself. We're applying to Apple to have Scootch notarised, and then this goes away. You only do it once: updates open as normal.
The Mac asks to let Scootch see a folder
The first time you copy or drag files from a folder like Downloads or Desktop, the Mac asks to let Scootch read it. Allow it, and they go across.
The Mac asks for permissions
Scootch needs Accessibility on every Mac, and Input Monitoring on the one whose keyboard you use. Its window has buttons that open the right pages: switch Scootch on there, then restart it.

Linux

The AppImage won't open
Let it run as a program: right-click it, open Properties and allow it to run, or run chmod +x on it.
Linux asks for your password
The AppImage asks once, so Scootch can use your keyboard and mouse. The .deb and .rpm set this up as they install.

Any computer

The computers won't connect
Check they're on the same network and run the same version of Scootch. From 0.1.2 on, Scootch says which computer to update; Settings shows the version under This computer.
The pointer stutters now and then
Wi-Fi can pause for a split second, and the pointer pauses with it, mostly when both computers are on Wi-Fi. For the smoothest pointer, connect one of them to your router with a cable.
